Watershed Program Manager

The Trinity County Resource Conservation District is accepting applications for the position of Watershed Program Manager.  The Watershed Program Manager works under the direct supervision of the District Manager.  This is a full-time position with flexible scheduling, paid leave, and medical benefits.  District employees are subject to normal management reviews and serve at the discretion of the Board of Directors.

The Watershed Program Manager will develop, promote, and implement watershed improvement and planning projects for various and ongoing resource conservation projects for habitat restoration, planning, in-stream and watershed stewardship, vegetation management, and forest health projects.  This position will be involved in all aspects of program management including future planning, grant writing, budgeting, invoicing, reporting, project coordination, and environmental compliance.  This is a supervisory position.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. General knowledge of watershed management strategies and ongoing watershed work within Trinity County, California, or similar.
  2. Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  3. Ability to communicate with people of all backgrounds.
  4. Experience supervising staff and projects.
  5. Experience writing or managing grants and projects with budgeting, invoicing, reporting requirements, and deadlines.
  6. Self-directed with the ability to prioritize and coordinate workload, both independently and as part of a team.
  7. Experience collaborating closely with local, state, and federal partners.
  8. Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  9. Knowledge and experience working in an office setting and tracking projects.
  10. Five years or more of combined education and professional experience in natural resources-related projects, and/or a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in environmental sciences or related natural resources field, such as limnology, watershed sciences, hydrology, fisheries, ecology, biology, botany, environmental sciences, etc.

Desired Qualifications:

In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate would have:

  1. Knowledge of conservation districts, nonprofit, and/or grant-based agencies.
  2. Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental policies and regulations pertaining to resource management programs, including NEPA and CEQA processes.
  3. Previous experience conducting watershed monitoring surveys and/or related watershed fieldwork tasks.
  4. Prior experience collaborating for watershed or other management plans and documents.

Duties:

Position duties may include the following depending on program needs:

  • Direct or support all current watershed projects including grant oversight, budgeting, contracting, supervising, and project planning and implementation.
  • Develop future projects in the form of grants and agreements with local, state, and federal partners and funding entities.
  • Complete invoicing and reporting for all projects in the Watershed Program.
  • Develop detailed reports and presentations for projects for various councils, as requested.
  • Collaborate with partnering agencies, councils, and community groups to support the mission of the Trinity County RCD.
  • Supervise Watershed Project Coordinator, Watershed Conservation Technicians, Americorps Program Members, and Watershed Interns. Participate in personnel performance evaluations of subordinate staff.
  • Support other departments in program and project development and collaborate on ongoing projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Approximately 85% Office and 15% site, event, or fieldwork.  Depending on the season and project locations, this position requires flexibility.  Teleworking is eligible for driven individuals after the first 6 months on the job.  The TCRCD is a family-friendly organization that recognizes the need for flexible scheduling.

Botany Project Manager Position Description


Botany Program Manager

The Botany Program Manager, in collaboration with other District staff, will help develop, promote and implement resource conservation projects for revegetation, habitat restoration, invasive species management, botanical surveys, and native plant nursery operations.  The position will be involved in all aspects of resource conservation projects from concept to completion, including initiating contact with cooperators, identifying needs, grant writing, environmental compliance, budgeting, implementation, monitoring, and detailed reporting.

Other responsibilities may include participating on related interdisciplinary working groups, and working collaboratively with staff, partner organizations, and agencies to provide input on technical documents and reports.  The ideal candidate is a team player with a diverse skill set who can work effectively in a collaborative environment and is self-directed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Desired Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills and experience:

  • A college degree in a natural resource related field, such as ecology, biology, botany, environmental sciences or related field
  • Knowledge of native plant identification, seed collection and propagation, and native plant nursery operations
  • Knowledge of revegetation techniques, methodologies, and best practices
  • Knowledge of invasive species management, noxious weeds, and appropriate treatments
  • Knowledge of botanical surveys for rare and sensitive plants
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental policies and regulations pertaining to resource management programs, including NEPA and CEQA processes
  • Possession of professional certifications and/or training such as CNPS Certified Botanist, ISA Certified Arborist, or other professionally recognized license or other professionally recognized license or training
  • Experience managing equipment operations related to revegetation and noxious weed removal
  • Experience with ArcGIS Field Maps, Avenza Maps, ArcGIS Collector, or other mobile mapping software

  • Responsible for planning, design, budgeting, and implementation for all phases of multifaceted revegetation and habitat restoration projects, including direct supervision of District staff and contractors, compliance with any requisite environmental rules, laws, and permits, and satisfactory completion of project goals
  • Concept development for future projects and proposals, including grant writing
  • Effectively schedule, train, and assign tasks to staff for timely project completion
  • Communicate regularly with District staff, the public, and external partners, colleagues, and collaborators, both orally and via written project reports in formal and informal settings
  • Identify and collect native plant material and manage/supervise day to day nursery operations
  • Assist with preparation of and oversight of project contracts
  • Supervise Project Coordinator and Conservation Technicians and participate in personnel performance evaluations
  • Conduct project monitoring to evaluate results and trends, and recommend improvements to project designs
  • Develop detailed reports and presentations for projects
  • Support other departments in program and project development and collaborate on on-going projects
  • Other duties as directed

Work Environment      

Office and field work, with the majority occurring in an office setting.  Depending on the season and project locations, this position may require occasional camping out at or near the job site during the field season workweek.  Per Diem is paid for overnight details.  Depending on the season and program needs, the average work week will change at times. Typical workweeks are four, 10-hour days, or five, 8-hour days.

Botany Project Manager Position Description


Watershed Conservation Technician II

Trinity County Resource Conservation District is accepting applications for the position of Watershed Conservation Technician II.  The Watershed Conservation Technician II works closely under the supervision of the Project Coordinator and the Program Manager and may perform a variety of natural resources related tasks.  This position requires a person who can work effectively in a collaborative environment, is self-directed, and who is comfortable working independently. The Watershed Conservation Technician II is a full-time temporary seasonal position and will conduct field work approximately June through August of 2024. There is the potential for additional weeks of work following the field season. A majority of field work will be conducted in day trips, but 2-5 days of overnight camping will be required for select surveys. Per diem for meals will be provided when camping. Survey equipment and gear (waders, wading boots, wetsuits etc) will be provided, but technicians are required to obtain their own camping gear and hiking boots. This is not a benefited position, but employee will accrue Paid Time Off and Holiday Pay. Housing is not provided, and it is recommended that those seeking housing search in close proximately to Weaverville, CA.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Ability to hike upwards of 6 miles through rugged terrain and in inclement weather
  2. Ability to work independently or as a team to complete tasks, sometimes with minimal direct supervision
  3. Ability to work safely
  4. Ability to communicate effectively and independently solve problems
  5. Flexibility to assist with a variety of tasks to support program needs

  • Data entry and QA/QC

Snorkel Survey Volunteer Sign Up

Interested in conducting snorkel surveys to help count summer Steelhead and spring Chinook on tributaries of the Trinity River?

The 2024 Dive Season is anticipated to begin in July, but please register with the appropriate staff member early. The earlier the better!

Prior experience performing snorkel surveys with adult salmonid identification is important. Physical ability requirements include swimming a minimum of a mile an hour and hiking at least 3 strenuous miles.

All divers are responsible for providing their own food, camping equipment, dive gear, and safety gear. Divers should bring lunch items that do not require refrigeration and that can be transported in dry bags during the snorkel survey. There is a limited supply of dive gear available for use by volunteers. A comprehensive packing list will be provided to registrants.

To ensure that all aspects of the surveys are conducted in a safe manner there will be mandatory water safety/dive training sessions associated with each event. Snorkel Surveys are physically challenging and only those who consider themselves in good physical condition should participate in the dives.

  • Swiftwater River Rescue

All volunteers are responsible for their own safety.


Conservation Technician II - Botany

Trinity County Resource Conservation District is accepting applications for the position of Conservation Technician II in the Botany program. The Conservation Technician II works under the direct supervision of the Botany Project Coordinator and/or Botany Program Manager. This is a seasonal, full-time position with paid leave and medical benefits. District employees are subject to normal management reviews and serve at the discretion of the Board of Directors. This position requires a person who can work effectively in a collaborative environment and is self-directed.

Qualifications:

General knowledge of resource management is preferred. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and ability is qualifying.

  1. Ability to perform hard physical labor outdoors in rugged terrain and inclement weather.
  2. Ability to lift and carry 60 pounds
  3. Ability to safely use motorized equipment and /or willingness to learn. (string trimmer, chainsaw, pole saw, ATV, motorized cart, etc.)
  4. Experience and/or willingness to tow trailers behind 4x4 truck on various road types.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively and reliably to colleagues and supervisors.
  6. Ability to work as a team member, and when necessary, take initiative.
  7. Possession of a valid California Driver’s license.

Desired knowledge and skills:

  1. Knowledge of regional botany, especially native plant identification including noxious weed species.
  2. Knowledge and at least 1-year experience with general plant care and propagation practices.
  3. Possession of basic construction skills.
  4. Flexibility to assist with a variety of tasks to support program needs.

Duties:

Subject to the direction of the Botany Project Coordinator and/or Program Manager, the Conservation Technician II in the Revegetation program has the responsibility to:

  1. Assist with botanical, floristic, or invasive plant inventory surveys.
  2. Identify noxious weeds and perform various manual and mechanical control techniques.
  3. Collect GPS data with devices in field.
  4. Maintain and safely use motorized equipment (e.g. chainsaw, string/blade trimmers, and ATVs).
  5. Plant container stock, broadcast seed, spread and transport mulch and soil, operate and install irrigation and other planting-related tasks.
  6. Collect native plant materials in the field, and maintain native plant nursery to Best Practices standards.
  7. Drive company pick-up truck to sites, including hauling various trailers.
  8. Perform related duties as required, including work within other programs managed by the District.

Dress Requirements:

Depending on the season and job location, this position may require camping out at or near the job site during the summer workweek. Per diem is paid for overnight details. Depending on the season and job needs, the average workweek will change at times. Typical workweeks are four 10-hour days or, five 8-hour days.

Technicians are required to wear sturdy work boots and durable long pants while on the job. A back pack and personal water bottle will be necessary. The District provides PPE such as gloves, protective lenses and/or shields, hardhats, hi-visibility work shirts, rain gear, and all necessary tools.
