Conservation Technician I-III ~ Roads Department
Trinity County Resource Conservation District is accepting applications for the position of Roads Conservation Technician I - III. The Conservation Technician I-III works under the direct supervision of the Roads Manager and/or Project Coordinator.
The Roads Department maintains roads and trails on both the Shasta-Trinity and Six Rivers National Forest, BLM-managed lands, and smaller private projects. Equipment contractors implement the road work, but our department lays everything out, assists, and oversees the work. We also install or repair signs, brush roadsides, storm patrol, finishing work, raking, seeding, and mulching after equipment work. Roads is a small but robust team that covers a lot of ground in Trinity County. You must be motivated and prepared to make changes while performing a variety of work duties.
This position requires a person who possesses good communication skills, can work as part of a field crew, and can conduct fieldwork in a variety of environments and weather conditions. The Conservation Technician I – III is a full-time, temporary seasonal position that will run from approximately July to September 2025.
Qualifications:
- Valid California driver’s license.
- Ability to perform moderate to hard physical labor outdoors in rugged terrain and inclement weather.
- Ability to start work early, typically starting at 6 am.
- Ability to lift 60 pounds.
- Ability to use a chainsaw and be mechanically inclined.
- Ability to tow/park trailers behind 4x4 trucks on various road types is a plus.
- Ability to communicate effectively and reliably with colleagues and supervisors.
- Ability to use a computer and basic Microsoft programs.
- Ability to work as a team member and follow instructions.
Desired knowledge and skills:
- Knowledge of road drainage, prescribing road improvements related to sediment reduction, and implementing road inventory/maintenance work on forest roads, or very motivated to learn.
- Experience reading topographic maps, ability to use a phone, GPS, and basic hand tools.
- Keen observation skills and ability to take legible notes.
- Experience with power tools is helpful, as is navigating safely on mountain roads.
- Ability to follow written/verbal instructions and to work independently, reliably, if needed.
Additional Information:
This position requires camping during the summer workweek from May through November, Monday through Thursday, four ten-hour days. Per diem is paid for overnight details. Depending on the season and job needs, the average workweek will change at times. Typical workweeks are four 10-hour days, Monday-Thursday.
Technicians are required to wear sturdy work boots and durable long pants while on the job. The District provides PPE such as gloves, protective lenses and/or shields, hard hats, hi-visibility work shirts, rain gear, and all necessary tools.

Salary Range:
$21.00 to $25.36 per hour based on experience, DOE, plus per diem for camping.
