Conservation Technician II ~ Botany

Trinity County Resource Conservation District is accepting applications for the position of Botany Conservation Technician II. The Conservation Technician II works under the direct supervision of the Botany Crew Leader and Botany Program Manager. This position requires a person who possesses good communication skills, can work as part of a field crew, and can conduct fieldwork in a variety of environments and weather conditions. The Botany Conservation Technician II is a full-time, temporary seasonal position that will run from approximately June to September 2025. This is not a benefited position, but the employee will accrue Paid Time Off and Holiday Pay. Housing is not provided, and it is recommended that those seeking housing search in close proximity to Weaverville, CA.

Qualifications:

General knowledge of resource management is preferred. Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and ability will qualify.

  1. Ability to perform hard physical labor outdoors in rugged terrain and inclement weather.
  2. Ability to lift and carry 60
  3. Ability to safely use motorized equipment and/or willingness to learn (string trimmer, chainsaw, pole saw, ATV, motorized cart, etc.).
  4. Ability to tow trailers behind 4x4 trucks on various road types.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively and reliably with colleagues and supervisors.
  6. Ability to work as a team member, and, when necessary, take initiative.
  7. Possession of a valid California Driver’s license.

Desired knowledge and skills:

Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills and experience:

  1. Ability to work long days in the field while maintaining a positive attitude and attention to detail.
  2. Knowledge of regional botany, including native plants and noxious weed species, or ability to use a dichotomous key to identify plant species.
  3. Experience recording scientific data and keeping detailed work records.
  4. Experience with operating mechanical equipment and tools.
  5. Flexibility to assist with a variety of tasks to support program needs.
  6. Experience living or working in remote areas without cell service and the ability to use radios and satellite devices for communication.
  7. Experience driving 4x4 vehicles off-road, as well as hauling trailers.
  8. Experience collecting data with a GPS unit, tablets, or other handheld devices.
  9. Experience following standardized protocols and daily work plans.

Duties:

Subject to the direction of the Botany Crew Leader and/or Program Manager, the Conservation Technician II in the Botany program has the responsibility to:

  1. Assist with planting and maintaining remote revegetation sites, including running and maintaining irrigation systems, installing and repairing plant protection structures, weeding, mulching, and other maintenance activities as needed.
  2. Assist with botanical surveys while following survey protocols.
  3. Assist with pollinator surveys, including bumble bee surveys, while following survey protocols.
  4. Correctly identify noxious weeds and perform various manual and mechanical control techniques.
  5. Accurately navigate work areas and record field data, including using manual maps and datasheets as well as apps such as Avenza Maps, Survey123, FieldMaps, and handheld GPS units.
  6. Correctly maintain and safely use motorized equipment (e.g. water trailers, chainsaws, string/blade trimmers).
  7. Collect native plant materials (e.g. seeds, cuttings) and associated records in the field.
  8. Assist with maintaining container stock at a native plant nursery.
  9. Drive company pick-up truck to sites, including hauling various trailers.
  10. Maintain accurate field notes, daily work reports, and other records and paperwork as assigned.
  11. Perform related duties as required, including work within other programs managed by the District.

Additional Information:

The majority of fieldwork will be carried out on day trips, but this position may require camping during the summer workweek. Per diem is paid for overnight details. Depending on the season and job needs, the average workweek will change at times. Typical workweeks are four 10-hour days.

Technicians are required to wear sturdy work boots and durable long pants while on the job. A personal backpack and water bottle are required. The District provides PPE such as gloves, protective lenses and/or shields, hard hats, hi-visibility work shirts, rain gear, and all necessary tools.
